Why I started Military to Million
It has been said that writing down a goal makes it more likely you will achieve it. I accidentally experienced this for myself several years ago. As a 21-year-old college student dating in Florida, I was getting SICK of the men I was meeting. Some of my friends said I was being too picky and asked: “So what is your perfect man?”. At this point, I made a list. A silly, stupid, really specific list of things like “doesn’t follow any sports”, “isn’t a dick to servers” and “can shoot better than me”. A year and a half later I met my husband. Who for the record met EVERY criteria on the list except one. (It’s not his fault he has back hair!)
But this has stuck with me of the power of writing down what you want, what your goals are. My life goal? To be financially secure. What does that look like to me? Having grown up so financially insecure, the magic (cue Dr. Evil) $1,000,000 seems like it. I have just over a year in my 20’s left, and my plan is by my 50th birthday I will have a net worth of a million dollars. This website is my written goal. This blog is my notes on all I’ve learned and hopefully few mistakes I make.
So for 20 years, I will have to save, invest, or have interest growth totaling $50,000 each year. I’m going to honestly say that won’t happen this year (2017) or next (2018). But I am going to work my way to making more money, investing better and bring down household spending to make it there.
The Plan to a million dollar net worth
There is no “get rich quick” scam. I’m doing more a “get rich smartly and slowly” plan.
- Pay off my student loans!
- Save and invest 40-70% of our household income each month. (live FAR below our means)
- Learn as much as I can about investing and to use all that income smartly.
- Build my income from blogging.
- DO NOT go into any more debt.
